First designed by Georg Johann Luger in 1898, the first Luger pistol was also the first firearm to utilize the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge, also (and more commonly known today) as 9mm Luger. It was an exceptionally popular platform, utilized widely by Imperial Germany in the Heer (Germany Army) and German Navy, as well as by the Swiss. Luger pistols were in wide service between 1908 and 1938 at which point they were officially replaced by Walther P-38 pistols. Despite this, Lugers saw widespread use throughout the Second World War as well.
